Preparations are underway for the December 7-18 Conference of Parties (COP-15) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark. NOAA will be active on the delegation and have a prominent role in the U.S. Presence, a side-event and exhibit hall to be erected on the site of the Conference. In addition, The Department of Commerce’s Commercial Service is also hosting an event in conjunction with COP-15 to showcase U.S. technology in renewable energy and green building entitled “Bright Green”. NOAA is serving as the lead for the Department of Commerce for COP-15, providing substantive guidance and input to senior-level participation. In the run-up to Copenhagen, the USG is engaging in several high-level bilateral efforts (China, India, Indonesia) and is coordinating an outreach strategy to support a positive outcome from COP-15. NOAA is actively contributing to these efforts.
On Oct 27, the Director General of the World Conservation Union (IUCN), Julia Marton-Lefèvre, was in Washington DC to meet with IUCN members to discuss IUCN’s near-term objectives and their Strategy for the IUCN Secretariat in the United States. Ms. Marton-Lefèvre met with officials from NOAA, DOS, FWS, EPA, NPS and the Forest Service. NOAA has been an active member of IUCN for over 20 years and works collaboratively on a number of projects of joint interest primarily species and habitat conservation, especially related to corals and marine protected areas. NOAA is able to multiply its global impact through its multiple partnerships with IUCN, in areas including those listed above. Benefits of IUCN membership to NOAA include: influencing and contributing to the work and governance of IUCN, and the national and global conservation agenda, through preparation and dissemination of statements on conservation issues; and being part of a collective and global voice in conservation planning and decision-making at local, national and regional levels, as well as in the international arena.
The IUCN brings together 86 States, 120 government agencies, more than 700 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and some 10,000 scientists and experts from 181 countries in a unique worldwide partnership.
