Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Thirty-Ninth Session of the Executive Council, Paris, 21-28 June 2006. This meeting will focus on several high priority NOAA topics such as tsunamis, global Earth observations, marine ecosystem assessments, and activities undertaken by a number of international institutions that seek to improve our collective efforts to facilitate work on these issues. VADM Lautenbacher will present the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) and its relationship to the IOC community with direct implications for tsunami and all-hazards coordination. The 58th Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) will meet June 16-20, 2006 in St Kitts and Nevis. The Annual Meeting comprises three parts, some of which meet prior to the Commission meeting: 1) IWC’s Scientific Committee Meeting; 2) Sub-committees Meetings; and 3) Annual Commission Meeting, which is attended by government delegates, observers from non-member governments, other intergovernmental organizations, and non-government organizations, and the press/media. The U.S. Delegation will be headed by U.S. IWC Commissioner Bill Hogarth. There are several issues that will be addressed at the 2006 meeting including interference with whale research, the revised management scheme, sanctuaries, and several workshops. XXIX Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, Edinburgh 12 – 23 June 2006. The United Kingdom will host the 29th meeting of the Antarctic Treaty Parties, and the ninth meeting of the Committee on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. The meeting will involve discussions of regular matters, including the operations of the Antarctic Treaty parties, and the review and establishment of protected areas. It is anticipated that designation of specially protected species and protection of marine areas will be discussed.
